Dear *|FNAME|*,
Last summer, I had a tree in my yard cut down. It was dying and leaning, and cutting it down intentionally seemed safer than letting it fall onto my house in a strong wind. My friends left it for me to clean up, and after a neighbor took the trunk for firewood, a pile of smaller branches remained. We planned a burn party, but the wind picked up, it became unsafe, and the party was canceled.
That pile sat there all summer and all winter, waiting for a second chance. Eventually, it was buried under four feet of snow, hidden sight. But with the recent sun and rain, the snow has receded, and the pile re-emerged.
This past Sunday, I went out with some cardboard and matches to see about finally burning it. The top was snow-free, but everything was wet with ice underneath. I started a small fire on the edge. One piece of cardboard at a time, I fueled it, drying out the twigs until I could pull in a branch.
As I watched the fire first melt the ice, then consume the wood, I thought back to last week’s theme:
** Fire and Ice
————————————————————
**
————————————————————
In the summer, burning that pile would be dangerous—the long, dry grasses could catch and spread a fire beyond my control. But now, the snow provides the necessary boundaries to keep the fire contained.
The wood doesn’t catch easily, but once it’s burning, it is strong enough to evaporate the ice. However, it needs constant nourishment. It needs a catalyst for ignition. Without a spark, that fuel is just inert wood. Left alone, it would take generations to decompose. Fire simply speeds up that process.
By pulling each branch out of the ice and placing it on the fire, it was recognized and released.
** Internal Winter
————————————————————
I experienced this recognition and release in a very personal way this week. It started with a discovery that triggered a wave of grief, guilt, and frustration. Because I was on my way to work, I couldn’t process it—I had to push it down.
The rest of my workday felt… automatic. I felt like a blockhead, as if my mind were shut off and information couldn’t get in. I was doing things slowly, by habit, and felt of little use to the store. It wasn’t until I got home and allowed myself to simply be—chatting with a friend just to chat—that I realized what had happened.
My internal electrical panel had a circuit breaker trip.
My productive parts—the Superwoman, Fixer, and Perfectionist—the ones that usually fuel my day like a cup of coffee, had short-circuited under the weight of that morning’s stress. In their place, the parts that usually live in the shadows crawled out: Guilt, Inner Critic, and Regret. These parts brought a heavy layer of winter back into my mind. They covered my thoughts in a thick, protective frost to keep me from touching the hot emotions I wasn’t ready to burn through yet.

This short-circuit and the resulting frost is exactly what I’ve been learning about in When Good Moms Feel Bad (https://www.jessicatomichsorci.com/when-good-moms-feel-bad) by Jessica Tomich Sorci and Rebecca Geshuri.
https://www.jessicatomichsorci.com/when-good-moms-feel-bad
The book explores how we aren’t just one monolithic “Mom”—we are made of different parts. Some parts are capable anchors, while others feel resentful, lonely, or critical. This week, I lived the bad feeling of being a good mom. I felt bad about my reaction, bad about my productivity, and bad about the icy shutdown in my head.
Reading this book helped me realize I wasn’t failing; I was just experiencing a tripped circuit. When we understand our parts, the shame begins to melt.
My Recommendation: Skip the audiobook and buy the physical copy (https://www.jessicatomichsorci.com/when-good-moms-feel-bad) . You need to be able to flip the pages, dog-ear the definitions of these parts, and use it as a manual for your own brain. If you feel like you’re doing everything right but still feeling wrong, please read this. Power through the dense introduction—the clarity waiting for you in Chapter One is the spark that starts the thaw.
** There is no “Miracle Cure”
————————————————————
Sometimes when doing Body Code work, I am asked why results take time. We live in a world that promises THE ANSWER in a single pill. But healing is much more like this fire and ice cycle.
In our sessions, we aren’t looking for a miracle cure; we are looking for the branches that are finally ready to be thawed and burned. Through careful attention, we gently move these parts—these old emotions and heavy beliefs—into the light where they can be processed into something wholesome and nourishing for the soil of our lives.
Q: If there isn’t a “miracle cure,” how do I know the work is actually happening?A: Think back to the burn pile. The most intense work is often invisible—it’s the heat required to melt the ice before the wood ever catches fire. In our sessions, “progress” often looks like a subtle softening. You might find you aren’t as reactive to a specific trigger, or that the “frost” in your mind doesn’t feel quite as thick. We are looking for the shift in your internal weather, which always precedes the outward transformation.
Q: Why can’t we just clear everything in one session?
A: Just like my field in the summer, burning too much, too fast can be unsafe. Your system has built these layers of “ice” and “snow” to protect you. If we melted it all at once, the runoff would be overwhelming. We work at the pace of your own “seasonal thaw,” ensuring that as we release each emotion, your soil is ready to absorb the nourishment without being flooded.

** A Sneak Peak into Next Week
————————————————————
Next week, we are looking outward. A single branch pulled from the ice cannot sustain a fire on its own; once the heat consumes the immediate fuel, the flame falters in the cold. To truly burn through the frost, the fire requires the heat of the pile—it needs support and companionship to stay bright. I’ll be sharing an “appetizer” of community connection, featuring two local non-profits that provide the hearth for our collective warmth: Village of Mothers and the WOMB Initiative.
With love and healing,
