This month, we’ve covered a lot of ground together. For our last week in September, I wanted to share something a little lighter and more casual—a resource that has profoundly shaped my work and my life: Ina May Gaskin’s Spiritual Midwifery (https://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Midwifery-Ina-May-Gaskin/dp/1570671044) .
I first read this book in 1999 while in midwifery school, and I’ve probably reread it over a hundred times since. Each time, I’m reminded why it’s my favorite. It’s more than just a textbook; it’s a testament to the power of birth and a beautiful look into the past.
** A Look Back at “The Farm”
————————————————————
The book is set in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a time of “spiritual reawakening” that saw the formation of many communes and communities. One such group, “The Caravan,” was led by Stephen Gaskin, who moved from San Francisco, CA to Summerton, TN to establish The Farm Community (https://thefarmcommunity.com/) . When a woman in the group went into labor en route, they asked for Stephen to assist with the birth because she did not want to go to a hospital. However, Stephen was busy, and his wife, Ina May, stepped in. This spontaneous birth experience changed her life forever, inspiring her to become the community’s midwife.
She learned from each birth she attended and sought out friendly physicians to deepen her knowledge. This unique blend of hands-on experience and traditional medical wisdom forms the foundation of her work and the book.
** Why I Can’t Recommend It Enough
————————————————————
Spiritual Midwifery (https://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Midwifery-Ina-May-Gaskin/dp/1570671044) is a truly unique book. The first two-thirds are filled with 75 captivating birth stories from roughly a decade of experiences. These stories are a huge part of why I love the book so much. They fueled my passion for birth work and guided me through my own pregnancies and labors.
The stories are told with such vibrant, sensual language that they create a powerful paradigm shift, reframing what we consider “normal” and “healthy” in labor. They help let go of fear and embrace the natural beauty of the process.
The last third of the book is a practical goldmine. It’s divided into two sections:
* One part for parents, packed with helpful information for birth preparation and the early days with a newborn.
* Another part for midwives, serving as a pocket manual that covers common complications and the many nuances of a normal birth.
This book is the perfect starting point if you want to make informed choices for your birth. It encourages you to think and talk about topics that are often considered taboo, creating a comfortable and relaxed environment for learning.

** A Simple Practice for Your Birth Journey
————————————————————
Ina May Gaskin’s book, Spiritual Midwifery (https://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Midwifery-Ina-May-Gaskin/dp/1570671044) , is filled with stories that can reframe the way we think about birth. These stories are a reminder that labor isn’t a medical event to be feared but a natural, powerful experience to be embraced.
As you prepare for your own journey, try this simple practice. Find a quiet moment and sit comfortably. Close your eyes and take a few deep, calming breaths. Imagine a peaceful, safe space. In this space, visualize your birth. Don’t focus on the details or what could go wrong. Instead, imagine yourself feeling strong, capable, and connected to your body’s wisdom. See yourself moving freely, listening to your instincts, and being supported by those around you.
This isn’t about controlling the outcome. It’s about training your mind to view birth as a positive, healthy process. Just as Ina May’s birth stories can shift our perspective, this visualization can help you build confidence and create a sense of calm readiness for the beautiful, transformative experience ahead.
** I want to hear your story

As we close out this month’s series, I hope this review of Spiritual Midwifery (https://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Midwifery-Ina-May-Gaskin/dp/1570671044) has given you a fresh perspective on the power and beauty of birth. Whether you’re a mother-to-be, a seasoned parent, or someone just beginning to explore this topic, remember that knowledge is the first step toward empowerment.
Ina May Gaskin’s work reminds us that birth is not a passive event but an active journey. By learning and sharing stories, we can reframe our understanding and embrace this incredible rite of passage with confidence and joy.
Thank you for joining me this month. Take a moment to reflect on your own story. What are the stories that have shaped your beliefs about birth? I would love to hear from you! Reply to this email, or share your reflections with a friend, a partner, or online. Let’s continue this conversation together.
** Looking Ahead
————————————————————
As we look ahead to October, we’ll shift our focus to a topic that touches so many lives but is often left unsaid. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and we will be dedicating our next four newsletters to navigating this sensitive journey with compassion and understanding. We’ll be sharing personal stories, highlighting a featured event on grief, tackling difficult questions about why this topic is so hard to discuss, and reviewing powerful books that offer comfort and guidance. Our hope is to create a space where these experiences can be acknowledged and honored, so please join us as we explore the heart of grieving together.
