Dear *|FNAME|*,
Every life story is a powerful current, and mine has been defined by the undeniable, magnetic force of birth.
** The Calling
————————————————————
My journey into birth work began on a hot August afternoon when I was sixteen years old. My mother, determined to have a better experience than her first two traumatic hospital births, had chosen a home birth for her new baby. I spent most of her labor right behind her, bracing my arms against her lower back, providing constant counter-pressure (https://mamastefit.com/counter-pressure-science-3-techniques/) against the searing pain. When the pushing began, I was so caught up in her effort that I pushed with her until the midwives gently corrected me, teaching me to lend my strength without straining my own body.
Three years later, the calling became undeniable. My mother was having another baby, and this time, her labor was precipitous (https://australianbirthstories.com/pregnancy/precipitous-labour/) . The midwives rushed, but in the end, we were on the phone with them as my step-dad and sisters supported her head, and I knelt at the foot of the bed. I watched with bated breath as the baby’s head crowned (https://youtu.be/MKzfqiXvx5o?si=Ev98Eoi5i9o0TyL5) , then slipped back, a rhythmic, powerful dance. Then, finally, the head fully crowned. In a moment of pure awe, the baby slid completely into my waiting hands. I handed her to our mother, speechless for the first time in my life.
In that instant, at nineteen, I knew birth work was for me.
** Path to Midwifery
————————————————————
With no clear idea of where to start, I worked and putzed around for a few years until someone pointed me toward a midwifery school in Oregon. In 1999, I enrolled in Birthingway College of Midwifery (https://birthingway.org/) .
During my first year, the requirement for doula certification became a profound training ground. Two experiences stood out, cementing my understanding of birth as a deeply psychological event.
The first was with a young teenage girl who had a history of sexual abuse. She was terrified that birth would be impossible for her, yet she possessed an intense inner determination for an unmedicated birth. When transition (https://midwifeinthecity.love/understanding-the-transition-phase-of-labor-what-to-expect/) hit, she began to panic, her family’s nervous energy becoming a distraction. I quietly asked the nurse if I could have a moment alone. The room emptied, and I took the young mother’s hands, looking directly into her eyes. I reminded her: “This is the moment we prepared for.” I guided her through a visualization, connecting her breath and hands to her cervix. Her eyes never left mine. She pushed gently, without pain medication or tearing, and her little one was born in a rush of power and peace. As she held her baby, she cried, not from pain, but from triumph—she had overcome her trauma and transformed something terrible into the most beautiful experience of her life.
The second experience involved a woman who spoke no English. Despite using a translator for our visits, no one was available for the birth. We communicated only through our hearts and hands. I never spoke a word, relying entirely on touch, humming, groaning, and guided breath to connect with her through her labor.
** Interruption and New Vision
————————————————————
Unfortunately, life had other plans. I became pregnant, and severe hyperemesis gravidarum (https://twoheartshealing.info/wp-content/uploads/sites/109/2025/09/Morning-Sickness-PDF-2025.pdf) forced me to halt my schooling. After marrying the baby’s father and having my first child, I quickly became pregnant again, lacking the physical and financial resources to resume my studies.
Six months after the birth of my second baby, my husband died in a terrible airplane crash (https://www.seawindpilots.com/archives/devlin-aviation) . Reeling emotionally and financially, my sole focus became supporting my two babies while staying home with them. I was determined they wouldn’t lose a mother right after losing their father.
Though I moved across the country, remarried, and went on to have five more children (all home births), and even attempted to resume midwifery studies twice, I never succeeded. I finally accepted that I wouldn’t be a midwife, resolving to work as a doula once my children were grown.
But around the birth of my fifth child, I discovered The Emotion Code by Dr. Bradley Nelson (https://discoverhealing.com/certification/ref/heatherlefoll/) and began the certification process. I soon attended a birth, utilizing these new skills before, during, and after, which significantly helped a mother through a long, pre-eclamptic labor.
http://www.twoheartshealing.infoI realized I had to marry the two together. I had found a key to helping women overcome deep-rooted emotional trauma—whether from past experiences, cultural expectations, or dramatic media. Yet, I listened to people who discouraged me and hid my dream.
In 2021, a family trauma—my divorce—changed my trajectory one last time. While it forced me to work outside the home, it also gave me the clarity to fully conceptualize and envision the work I’ve been called to do. Two Hearts Healing was conceived in early 2022, and over the last three years, it has developed in preparation for its own birth in the summer of 2025.
Every challenge—from the loss of my husband to the years spent raising my seven children—was not a roadblock, but a winding path leading to a deeper wisdom. I learned that birth is not just a physical event; it’s a profound emotional and spiritual transformation that deserves to be approached with intentionality, healing, and unwavering support. My deepest honor is to bring this comprehensive, heart-centered approach to you and your family.
